The bacterial infection which occurs before or during labor is known as chorioamnionitis. It is also known as “amnionitis” or “intra-amniotic infection”. When the bacteria infects the chorion, amnion and amniotic fluid around the fetus this condition arises. It is usually seen in preterm births and can cause serious infection in the mother as well as the baby. It is also seen in 2 – 4 % of full term deliveries.
