Puerperal blues: Keep an eye out for it

Nearly 50% of the postpartum women suffer from Puerperal blues which is a transient state of mental illness. It is observed 4-5 days after delivery and lasts for a few days. Symptoms are depression, anxiety, tearfulness, insomnia, helplessness and negative feelings towards the infant. No metabolic or endocrine abnormality is detected but a lowered tryptophan level is observed. Treatment is reassurance and psychological support from the family members.
