There are two mechanisms through which cord prolapse can take place that further leads to hypoxia or anoxia in the fetus:
- Arterial vasospasm: constriction of vessels.
- Occlusion: The presenting part of the fetus exerts pressure on the cord thereby ‘occluding’ the blood supply to the fetus.
