What causes the onset of labor (Part 1): Uterine distension

The growing fetus and the amniotic fluid exerts pressure on the myometrium. Uterine distension/stretch helps in increasing the gap junction proteins, oxytocin receptors, and specific contraction associated proteins (CAPs). This can explain the onset of  preterm labour in case of  twin or polyhydramnios pregnancies due to uterine overdistension.
