Velamentous cord insertion also known as umbilical cord abnormality is a major cause for vasa previa. This happens when the umbilical cord enters into the membranes and resulting in vessels which are unprotected leading to the placenta. Another main cause is bilobed placenta, where the placenta is into two pieces, in such cases the vessels may be protected where they cross between the two lobes.
