Nuchal cord creates problems when the cord is tightly wrapped around the neck it is similar to strangulation. Umbilical cord compression causes obstruction of blood flow in a thin-walled umbilical vein whereas the infant continues to pump out the blood through thick-walled umbilical arteries causing hypovolemia, anemia, and acidosis.
